Getting started

What the online escape room is, whether it is free, and how to start a room in your browser.

What is this online escape room?

It is a single-player point-and-click puzzle game that runs entirely in your browser. You are locked in a study and have to search the room, find hidden clues, solve a chain of three locks — a number lock, a symbol dial, and a final door code — and open the door to escape. Every room is a fresh procedural layout with new codes.

Is the online escape room free?

Yes. escaperoomgame.app is completely free and runs in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls. Open the page and a room is ready.

Do I need to download an app or create an account?

No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app-store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.

Is this a multiplayer escape room?

No. This is a single-player game designed for one person on one device. There is no room code to share, no chat, and no host — just you, the room, and the clock.

Gameplay and rules

The lock chain, the timer and par, whether every room is solvable, and how a run ends.

How do I play?

Tap each object to look closer. Straighten the painting for a cipher note, read the three tagged numbers on the bookshelf, count them back by the note’s number, and enter the result on the desk drawer in the note’s order. The drawer holds a UV torch — use it on the rug to reveal the safe symbols. The safe holds a brass key and the last two digits of the door code; the drawer had the first two. Enter the four-digit code on the door and step out.

Is there a time limit? Can I lose?

There is no failure state. A stopwatch counts up from the moment the room opens, and each room has a par time of roughly 2½ to 3½ minutes, but nothing bad happens if you go over. A run ends only when you open the door or start a new room.

Is every room solvable?

Yes. Unlike a shuffled card game, every generated room is guaranteed solvable. The clues always fully determine the codes, and the three locks open in a fixed order — drawer, then safe, then door — so there is always exactly one next step.

How long does a room take?

A first room usually takes five to ten minutes while you learn where everything is. Once you know the structure, a clean escape is often under three minutes, and the par time reflects that.

What is “par” and why does it matter?

Par is a target time set per room, between about 150 and 210 seconds. Beating it is a personal challenge, not a requirement. Your best time and your fastest hint-free escape are tracked so you can chase them across rooms.

Why did my streak reset?

The current streak counts consecutive escapes. Starting a new room before you have opened the door on the current one — or pressing “New room” mid-run — breaks the streak and sets it back to zero. Your longest streak is kept separately as a best.

Puzzles and hints

The cipher, the number and symbol locks, how hints work, and what happens on a wrong code.

What kinds of puzzles are in the room?

A Caesar-style cipher on the painting note, a three-digit push-button number lock on the drawer, a UV-light reveal under the rug, a four-symbol dial on the wall safe, and a four-digit final code on the door. They are the staples of real-world escape rooms, scaled to a single room.

How do hints work?

The hint button always describes your current step and never reveals a later one. Each hint you take is counted, and an escape with zero hints is recorded as a separate hint-free best. Most rooms can be solved without a hint once you have searched everything.

What happens if I enter a wrong code?

Nothing but a short buzz. There is no attempt limit, no lockout, and no time penalty for a wrong code. You can brute-force a lock if you want to, though the clues make that unnecessary.

I decoded the shelf but the drawer will not open.

Two things trip people up: direction and order. The painting note says count back, so subtract the shift and wrap 0 back to 9 if you go under. Then check the note’s read order — the three digits are only right in the sequence it gives.

The rug just shows faint marks.

You need the UV torch from the desk drawer first. Open the drawer, pick up the torch, then open the rug close-up again — a “Use UV torch” button appears, and the four safe symbols become readable.

Can I replay the same room?

Each new room is generated from a fresh random seed, so you will not see the exact same codes twice in normal play. The structure — six objects, three locks, one cipher — stays the same, which is what lets you get faster.

Devices, saving, and accounts

Mobile play, supported browsers, local progress, and why a streak might reset.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The layout is built for touch: the room and its controls fit above the fold in portrait, close-ups fill the same panel, and every code can be entered with on-screen buttons. Starting a new room is instant with no page reload.

Does the game save my progress?

Rooms entered, rooms escaped, best time, fastest hint-free escape, and your current and longest streak are saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. A room in progress is not saved if you close the tab.

Which browsers are supported?

Any current browser with JavaScript: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile versions. If an object does not respond, update the browser, allow scripts for this site, and reload.

How do I reset my stats?

Open Stats from the game bar and use “Reset progress”, then confirm with the second tap. That clears rooms entered, rooms escaped, best time, fastest hint-free escape, and both streak values on this browser. It cannot be undone.

Can I play offline?

The game needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab playable without a network, but there is no dedicated offline app or installer.
